AI Image Upscaler API : Upscale Images to 2K or 4K

Send one image, choose 2k or 4k and get a larger, high-resolution PNG back. Try the upscaler right here, then call the same model from your product with one key and one balance.

  • One image
  • PNG at 2k or 4k
  • Fixed price per task
  • Same model through the API

Features

Key AI Image Upscaler API Features

  • 2k or 4k, same price

Set resolution to 2k or 4k on each task. Both cost the same, so you choose by what the image is for, not by budget.

  • Real output sizes

A 640×480 photo upscaled to 2k comes back as 2880×2160, and a 1600×1598 image upscaled to 4k comes back as 4096×4096.

  • PNG output with a preview

Every result is a PNG at outputs[].url, plus a JPEG preview of up to 1024 pixels on the long side at preview_url for showing it in your interface.

  • Two parameters, no prompt

A request is just image_url and resolution, nothing else. The model works from the picture itself, so an upscale slots into any upload or publishing flow.

  • Automatic retries

Very large jumps in size can occasionally fail. NanoAPI retries automatically; if the upscale still fails, the task ends with generation_failed and you're refunded in full.

  • About three minutes

An upscale takes about three minutes from creation to result, and costs one fixed price whatever the size of the original.

Overview

What Is the AI Image Upscaler API?

An AI image upscaler enlarges a picture and rebuilds the detail a simple resize can't, so a small or low-resolution image becomes usable at a much bigger size. The AI Image Upscaler API does this over HTTP: send a link to one image and a target resolution, and get back a single high-resolution PNG.

On NanoAPI it's the model upscale-image of the product upscale_image. You choose 2k or 4k on every task, and the output size follows from your original: 640×480 at 2k gives 2880×2160, and 1600×1598 at 4k gives 4096×4096. The two sizes cost the same.

Very small images asked to grow a lot are the hardest case: a 640×480 picture taken straight to 4k, for example, may fail. NanoAPI retries automatically, and if the task still fails it's refunded in full. For small images, 2k is the safer target.

The upscaler runs on the same POST /v1/tasks endpoint, API key and prepaid balance as every NanoAPI model. Try it in the studio at the top of this page, then call the AI Image Upscaler API at https://api.nanoapi.ai/v1 from your own app; both run the same model at the same price.

How it works

How to Use the AI Image Upscaler API

  1. 1

Step 1: Get your API key

Sign in to NanoAPI with Google and create a key on the API Keys page of the console. It authenticates every request, so keep it on your server.

  2. 2

Step 2: Top up your balance

Add funds on the Top up page of the console. The balance is prepaid in USD, never expires and is shared by every NanoAPI model, image and video alike.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Create a task

Send POST /v1/tasks with model upscale-image, image_url (a public http(s) link that downloads directly) and resolution, 2k or 4k. resolution is required on every request.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Get the PNG

Receive the finished task once at your webhook_url, or poll GET /v1/tasks/{task_id} every 15 seconds or more. After about three minutes the upscaled PNG is at outputs[].url.

Why NanoAPI

Why Use the AI Image Upscaler API on NanoAPI

  • One key, every model

Generate an image, extend it, remove its background and upscale it with the same API key and balance. Every NanoAPI model goes through POST /v1/tasks and returns the same task object.

  • Fixed price, failures free

Every upscale costs the same, 2k or 4k. If the image can't be read or the upscale fails, the reserved amount goes back to your balance.

  • Webhooks or polling

Pass a webhook_url and receive the finished task once, signed to the Standard Webhooks spec (verifying is optional), or poll one task or a batch of task ids.

  • Safe retries and spend limits

Send an Idempotency-Key and a resent request returns the task it already created instead of charging twice. Cap each key's hourly, daily or total spending in the console.

  • A console for every request

See each request with its status, input, cost and result, your daily usage by product and every movement of your balance, and manage keys and the webhook secret.

  • Try online, then integrate

The studio on this page runs the same model at the same price, so you can upscale your own images before writing code. The docs also come as one llms.txt file for AI coding assistants.

Use cases

What You Can Build With the AI Image Upscaler API

  • Bigger images for print

Take web-sized photos, artwork or AI-generated images to 4k for posters, merchandise and print-on-demand products.

  • Product catalogs that hold up

Upscale small supplier photos to 2k so listings still look good when shoppers zoom in on a product.

  • Old and small photos, enlarged

Bring scans, old snapshots and tiny thumbnails up to a size that works on today's high-resolution screens.

  • Upscaling inside your app

Add an upscale to 4K button to a photo editor, a gallery or an image generation flow: your server calls the AI Image Upscaler API and the webhook brings back the PNG.

AI Image Upscaler API FAQ

01

What is the AI Image Upscaler API?

An HTTP API that enlarges an image to 2k or 4k with AI. On NanoAPI you send POST /v1/tasks with model upscale-image, an image_url and a resolution, and get one upscaled PNG back by webhook or by polling.

02

How much does it cost to upscale an image?

One fixed price per task, the same for 2k and 4k and for any size of original. It's reserved when the task is created and charged when it succeeds; a failed task is refunded in full. The live price is in the table above, on the pricing page and in GET /v1/products.

03

What output sizes do 2k and 4k give?

The output size depends on your original. For example, a 640×480 image upscaled to 2k becomes 2880×2160, and a 1600×1598 image upscaled to 4k becomes 4096×4096. The result is always a PNG.

04

Why did my upscale fail?

Usually because the jump in size was too large, such as a 640×480 image straight to 4k: the generation service can fail without giving a reason. NanoAPI retries automatically; if it still fails, the task fails with generation_failed and is refunded in full, so try 2k for small images. A file that can't be downloaded or opened fails with invalid_media, also refunded.

05

Do I need a prompt or other settings?

No. upscale-image takes image_url and resolution and nothing more. Sending a parameter it doesn't have, such as prompt, returns 400 invalid_request.

06

How long does upscaling take?

About three minutes from creation to result, and longer when the service is busy. Use a webhook_url to be told when it's done instead of polling the whole time.

07

Can I upscale images made by other NanoAPI models?

Yes. Any public image link works, including the outputs[].url of a task from Nano Banana 2.1, GPT Image 2.5 or Seedream 5.0 Pro: pass it as image_url to a new upscale-image task.

08

Can I try it online before integrating?

Yes. Sign in with Google and use the studio at the top of this page: it runs the same model at the same price as the AI Image Upscaler API and draws on the same balance, so you can check results and costs before you write any code.
